Oh you’ve been vegan for a few years and religiously research human nutrition? Well I googled veganism and FOX news says its unhealthy, so I think I know what I’m talking about.

My family made me get Chinese food with them. I didn’t really eat, but I drew on the place mats and did Dr. Who hangman with my cousins. For being such a good sport, I got that amazingly cool Catwoman figurine.
We had a post the other day about veggies being cheaper than people acknowledged, and it garnered some responses that called it insensitive to greater structures of food politics. We know the cost of food isn’t the sole determiner in the diet of many people, but the fact remains that many…

So after a horrible experience last night, I made myself a delicious vegan dinner. I went to Trader Joe’s and got this vegan chicken strip things, and flour tortillas and decided to make burritos. The red sauce is leftover from a mexican place we had gone too a few nights before, but you can use any type of salsa. The Trader Joe’s vegan chicken was actually good. You have to season it though. It came pre-seasoned, but you can barely taste it. The texture was good, not too stringy and not too gummy like some vegan meats can be.
My Aunt, who is wonderful, went to La Jolla and got me vegan cupcakes. They were descent, considering they are vegan I was just really happy to have gotten them and not had to bake them myself. They were moist and chocolatey, but the frosting had a bit too much cocoa powder on them. I am happy about that. She made my step-aunt buy them because my step-aunt was a complete dick to me yesterday. So that was kind of awesome.
So now I’m sitting in my room content, watching Batman: Year One and trying not to fall asleep.
Today I went to a steakhouse. My dad’s dad invited us all out to dinner. I pretty much begged my mom to let me stay home. Her response was that I needed to be “respectful” of everyone because I’m the only one that is vegan, and they shouldn’t have to change where they are going because of me. We get there and I looked at the menu. There was absolutely nothing I could eat. I had to get a greens only salad that was less than the size of my hand, and it couldn’t even come as an entree. I ended up just sitting there with nothing in front of me while everyone else ate dinner. My dad’s dad said, “I keep forgetting you are a vegetarian.” He forgets about this yet, he remembers that my step-aunt doesn’t eat gluten and will go out of his way to take her only to places with gluten free items. That was the only time he spoke to me tonight. In fact, no one really talked to me at all, which was completely insulting, and I was blatantly not invited to the zoo while my step-aunt and dad’s dad were talking about taking everyone else. I tried to be as respectful as I could and be polite and not make a big deal out of the situation. When we left I ended up crying in the car because of how they treated me. My dad took me to subway and then to get my favorite mango sorbet after we left the steakhouse. It was really nice on my dads part. I was respectful, I was polite as i could be, but I wasn’t given the same respect in return. Just, come on, how can you do that? How can you just let someone sit in a restaurant, hungry, and not able to eat there. My dad and my grandma and aunt were pissed, but somehow I think my mom thinks it’s partly my fault. My mom kept saying it was alright, and thankfully my aunt would say “no it’s not!” because I couldn’t say it. I really don’t get how people can be so inconsiderate.

Loving the fact that my aunt, who happens to be a nurse, is validating all the health advice that I give my parents.
It’s been a crazy few days and they are going to be here another week. I haven’t been able to cook or anything. Last thing I made was a veggie burger. I might go to the Wild Animal Park, and if I do there will be pics.
Making Guacamole
coolest ever
I made stir fry tonight. It’s garlic, onions, cabbage, celery, cauliflower, broccoli, and mushrooms.
I marinated the mushrooms in a mix of garlic, hot chilli sauce, rice vinegar, soy sauce, lemon juice, salt and pepper. I dumped the marinade onto all the veggies while they were cooking as not to waste it. It made everything taste amazing.
